My Hubby (ex RN) and myself had a wonderful tour around the Explorer. She is definitely ‘A work in progress’ but fascinating to learn about her. We were made to feel very welcome by the volunteers. Contact them via email if you have an interest in ships of this kind, and would like to visit…but do remember that ‘every penny counts’ with the restoration project, and try and gift a little in return for the honour of going aboard this old lady

“Lovely experience, a real step back in time. Jim was a fantastic guide and the tea, sandwiches and cakes in the Officers galley was a lovely surprise at the end of tour. A wee gem and well worth a visit.”

“The ship is undergoing restoration right now but anybody who knows anything about the once huge British fishing industry would find a classic example, probably the only one remaining, of a big UK deep sea trawler. You can see the engine room, crew quarters and bridge and the people involved are glad to show you round. It's a great visit for those who like steam engines etc. but you have to be able to climb engine room ladders to get the full benefit of your visit. I enjoyed every minute of my look round the ship and hope to visit again when in the area.”

“If you like steam engines and are interested in the now largely disappeared massive UK distant water fishing industry then it is a rare chance to see round a big steam trawler…The volunteers are very welcoming and helpful. I have visited several times now and you can see the progress being made on saving this iconic ship - surely the last one afloat. ”

“I was given a tour of the vessel including a brief history of the ship's journey. It was interesting to see the dedication and vision of many of the volunteers. It will obviously take a lot of time and effort to restore this ship but it is definitely a project worth following and supporting. ”
